“Birgit Kaleva’s work “Emasse” (2023) is the result of an unexpected and, for the artist, unsettling realization she arrived at while doing an internship in Berlin. At the end of exhausting workdays, she would take self-portraits in photo booths, creating a series of portraits.

“I don’t know anyone whose parents don’t get on their nerves in some way. By the time we reach adolescence, we have already begun thoroughly mapping out the traits and behavioral patterns we are determined to avoid in ourselves. This thought process often goes hand in hand with imagining ourselves as parents.”

The photo series is accompanied by the thoughts of a young woman, expressed in an autobiographical literary form. She has little interest in the societal role-playing that always casts the mother in a supporting role—idealized as domestic and the bearer of many children.”
